Ψάχνοντας ενδιαφέροντα και ξεχωριστά πράγματα να κάνω στο Τορόντο, έπεσα πάνω σε ένα tour των Toronto Urban Adventures που λέγεται ‘Beer makes history better‘!! Και σκέφτηκα γιατί όχι;; Θα μάθω για τις τοπικές μπύρες στην πόλη!! Αρκετά ενδιαφέρον σωστά;;

When I started searching about interesting things to do during my trip in Toronto, I found a tour of Toronto Urban Adventures called ‘Beer makes history better‘ and I thought ‘Sounds great! I’ll taste some local beers’! Sounds interesting, right??

 

Τελικά έμαθα πολλά παραπάνω!! Πέρασα 4 ώρες με τον Mike (τον φανταστικό οδηγό μας) και δύο ζευγάρια από την Αυστραλία μαθαίνοντας για τα ήθη και έθιμα στον Καναδά (αλλά και στην Αυστραλία)και την ιστορία της μπύρας στην πόλη του Τορόντο και παράλληλα γευτήκαμε τοπικές Καναδικές μπύρες!!

Eventually I’ve learnt so much more during the tour!! I spent 4 hours learning about customs in Canada (and Australia), the history of beer in the country and tasting local brews with Mike (our fantastic guide) and two Australian couples!! And I have to tell you I had a blast!!

 

Συναντηθήκαμε στις 14.00 έξω από το Hockey Hall of Fame στη συμβολή των οδών Yonge και Front και ξεκινήσαμε!!

The meeting point was outside the Hockey Hall of Fame (totally Canadian, right??), NW corner of Yonge St. and Front St. at 2 p.m. And the tour has just begun!!

 

 

Kάναμε μια μικρή στάση στο πάρκο Berczy για να θαυμάσουμε ένα σιντριβάνι, ένα από τα πιο πρωτότυπα που έχω δει ποτέ, ένα σιντριβάνι με αγάλματα σκύλων!! Cool, right?? Και λίγα μέτρα πιο μετά είδαμε το Gooderham building ή αλλιώς το Flatiron building (θα καταλάβεις από τη φωτογραφία γιατί λέγεται έτσι), ένα από τα πιο instagrammable κτήρια στην πόλη!! Στο πίσω μέρος του θα δεις ένα υπέροχο mural.

First we made a stop at Berczy Park to admire a fountain, yes you’ve heard right!! But it was a special one, a dog fountain! Cool, right?? A few metres away you can see the Gooderham building also known as the Flatiron building (when you see the photo you’ll understand why it’s called this way), one of the most instagrammable buildings in Toronto! On the back of this building you can admire a lovely mural.

 

 

Και ήρθε η ώρα για την πρώτη μας στάση για μπυρίτσα!! Στο C’est What!! Πολύ μου άρεσε ο χώρος, μεγάλος αλλά παράλληλα cozy! Είχε μεγάλη ποικιλία από μπύρες και είπα να δοκιμάσω την Mountain Lager μπύρα, μια ελαφριά lager και μου άρεσε αρκετά (θα πίναμε κι άλλες μετά άρα ήθελα μια ελαφριά για αρχή…χαχα)!! Μπορείς να δεις τον κατάλογο με τις μπύρες τους εδώ. Εδώ θα βρεις μόνο Καναδικές μπύρες!! 

And it was about time for our first beer stop!! At C’est What!! I liked the place quite much, large but cozy!! It has a wide selection of beers, I chose the Mountain Lager, a light lager beer (’cause we were going to try a number of beers after and I wanted a light one to start with…haha) and I liked it a lot !! Επόμενη στάση μας η αγορά St Lawrence, η μεγαλύτερη δημόσια αγορά στο Τορόντο από το 1803 παρακαλώ!! Μέσα μπορείς να βρείς τα πάντα!! Κρέας, ψάρι, ζυμαρικά, ελιές, σιρόπι σφενδάμου και φυσικά το peameal bacon sandwich, ένα τυπικό καναδικό σάντουιτς. Δεν δοκίμασα αλλά λένε ότι είναι φανταστικό!!! Τριγυρίσαμε λίγο και σταματήσαμε για να δοκιμάσουμε μουστάρδες και ice wine!

Our next stop was St Lawrence market, the biggest public market in Toronto! It’s there since 1803!! Inside you can find literally everything: fish, meat, pasta, olives, maple syrup and of course the typical Canadian sandwich, the peameal bacon sandwich. I didn’t try it but everyone says it’s fantastic!! We wandered around the market for a while and stopped to try some mustards and ice wine!

 

 

Συνεχίσαμε τη βόλτα μας στους δρόμους του Τορόντο….

We continued our walk around the streets of Toronto….

 

 

…μέχρι που φτάσαμε στο Betty’s, την επόμενη μπυροστάση μας!! Κάτσαμε στην αυλή και μοιραστήκαμε μια πεντάδα από διαφορετικές μπύρες με την μία κυρία από την Αυστραλία! Εγώ δοκίμασα Brickwork’s cider (ήθελα να δοκιμάσω κι έναν μηλίτη) και την Ass μπύρα (και όχι δεν μύριζε και δεν είχε γεύση σαν το όνομά της…χαχα) μαζί με nachos!!

…until we reached our next beer stop: Betty’s! We sat at the patio (the weather was quite warm) and I shared five beers with the one Australian lady of the group. I tasted the Brickwork’s cider (I wanted to taste a cider too) and the Ass beer (and no it didn’t smell or taste as it’s called…haha) with nachos!

 

 

Πηγαίνοντας προς το Distillery District (μια από τις αγαπημένες μου γειτονιές στο Τορόντο) και μιλώντας με τους καινούριους φίλους από Αυστραλία είχαμε μια μικρή έκπληξη! Μας σταμάτησε ένας άστεγος για βοήθεια (δεν φαινόταν πολύ καλά και είχε αφήσει κάποια πράγματά του σε ένα υπνωτήριο αλλά δεν θυμόταν πού ήταν αυτό). Κι έτσι είχα την ευκαιρία να δω λίγο τί κάνει ένας πολίτης στο Τορόντο όταν βρει στο δρόμο έναν άστεγο συμπολίτη του. Παίρνει τηλέφωνο ή πηγαίνει στο κοντινότερο αστυνομικό τμήμα για να πληροφορήσει τις αρχές κι εκείνες να βρουν ένα κέντρο υποδοχής αστέγων ή ένα υπνωτήριο για να τον βοηθήσουν! Ο οδηγός μας ο Mike πήρε λοιπόν τηλέφωνο την αστυνομία και καθησυχάσαμε μαζί τον κύριο ότι σε λίγο θα έρθει κάποιος αστυνομικός να τον πάει εκεί που θέλει (έχω δουλέψει σε κέντρο υποδοχής αστέγων ως ψυχολόγος). Μάλιστα στο τέλος του tour είχα την ευκαιρία να περάσω από πιο κοντινό αστυνομικό τμήμα με τον Mike για να δούμε τί έγινε με τον κύριο! Ευτυχώς όλα καλά! (Το αστυνομικό τμήμα ήταν μεγάλο και πεντακάθαρο και είχε και στολές αστυνομικών σε βιτρίνες….σαν μικρό μουσείο)

On our way to the Distillery District (one of my favourite places in Toronto) and as I was talking with my new friends from Australia, we had a little surprise. A homeless guy approached us and asked for help (he wasn’t looking good and as he said he had left some of his stuff at a homeless facility but he didn’t remember where that was). And so I had the chance to experience what a Torontonian does in a situation like this. Well he/she calls the nearest police station (or goes there) to inform the policemen about the situation and the policemen find the nearest homeless facility. So Mike (our guide) called the nearest police station and we together reassured the homeless man that a policeman will come to take him wherever he wants (I’ve worked for a while at a homeless facility as a psychologist). In fact, at the end of the tour I headed with Mike to the nearest police station to check what happened with the homeless guy!! And everything was eventually ok with him! (I have to say that I was impressed with the police station, a large and clean space with policemen uniforms on display….it was like a small museum)

 

Φτάσαμε λοιπόν και στο Distillery District!! Πρόκειται για μια γειτονιά του Τορόντο με πολλά καφέ, εστιατόρια, pubs, art galleries! Παλιά η περιοχή φιλοξενούσε το Gooderham and Worts Distillery, ένα από τα μεγαλύτερα ποτοποιεία στον κόσμό!! Μπαίνεις στην περιοχή και νομίζεις ότι έχεις τηλεμεταφερθεί στην Βικτωριανή εποχή με τα industrial κτήρια από κόκκινα τούβλα!! Μου άρεσε πάρα πολύ έχω να σας πω!!! Μάλιστα αποτελεί και σκηνικό για διάφορες ταινίες και σειρές!! Την ώρα που πήγαμε γίνονταν κάποια γυρίσματα σειράς αλλά δεν έλεγε ποιάς (λες να ήταν το Handmaid’s tale και να μην το κατάλαβα;;) Και επίσης αποτελεί και Εθνική Ιστορική τοποθεσία στον Καναδά.

And we reached eventually the Distillery District!! It’s a district of Toronto that contains numerous cafés, restaurants, art galleries and shops housed within heritage buildings of the former Gooderham and Worts Distillery, one of the largest distilleries in the world!! You enter the area and you think that you are transported back in time during the Victorian era with the red-brick industrial buildings!! I looved the district so much!! It’s a National Historic site in Canada and also a filming location for many movies and series. In fact, the day we visited a series episode was filming but we couldn’t see which (I hope it wasn’t The Handmaid’s Tale, I would love to meet June).

 

 

Πήγαμε λοιπόν για μπυρίτσα σε ένα από τα πολυσύχναστα μαγαζάκια στην περιοχή, το Mill Streer Brewery. Με τους φανταστικούς πίνακες στον τοίχο (είχε και τον περιοδικό πίνακα της μπύρας…χαχα). Και δοκιμάσαμε Vanilla Porter, Tankhouse Organic Ale, Cobblestone Nitro stout και άλλες. Η αγαπημένη μου ήταν η Vanilla Porter!! Τσέκαρε εδώ για όλες τις μπύρες τους.

So we went for a beer at one of the most famous pubs in the district, Mill Street Brewery!! And it had fantastic posters on the walls (it had the periodic table of beer…haha). And we tasted Vanilla Porter, Tankhouse Organic Ale, Cobblestone Nitro stout and a few more. My favourite was the Vanilla Porter!! Check here for all their beers.

 

 

 

 

Αν είσαι beer lover, αξίζει πολύ να κάνεις αυτό το tour όταν πας στο Τορόντο!! Ο Mike είναι από τους καλύτερους οδηγούς που έχω γνωρίσει (beer lover και ο ίδιος)! Γνώρισα κόσμο από την Αυστραλία και ήταν σαν να βγαίνω για μπύρες με φίλους!!

If you’re a beer lover, then you have to join this tour when you visit Toronto (or if you live in Toronto)!! Mike is one of the best tour guides I’ve ever met (and a beer lover himself)! I met some Australian guys on this tour and it was like I was hanging out with friends drinking beers!!
