Τον Σεπτέμβρη επισκέφτηκα μια φίλη μου που μένει στη Χάγη κι έκανα μια μονοήμερη στο Ρότερνταμ!! Δεν το περίμενα αλλά μου έκλεψε την καρδιά από τα πρώτα κιόλας λεπτά! Νομίζω πως αν μετακόμιζα ποτέ στην Ολλανδία (που δεν το νομίζω), θα έμενα σίγουρα στο Ρότερνταμ! Έχει νεανική αύρα, ψηλά κτήρια, μεγάλους δρόμους και λιμάνι….και σαν γέννημα θρέμμα Πειραιώτισσα δεν νομίζω ότι μπορώ να ζήσω κάπου που δεν έχει νερό κοντά.

In September I visited a friend who lives in the Hague and I did a daytrip to Rotterdam!! And the city had me at hello! If I ever decide to move in the Netherlands (I don’t think so but if), I would definitely choose Rotterdam! I found it so cool with its big roads, the tall buildings, the youthful aura and the port….I have to say as a girl born in Piraeus (the famous port of Athens) that I couldn’t live anywhere without water near.

 

Το Ρότερνταμ που λες είναι η δεύτερη μεγαλύτερη πόλη της Ολλανδίας σε πληθυσμό και φοιτητούπολη! Καταστράφηκε ολόκληρη κατά τον Β’ Παγκόσμιο πόλεμο και χτίστηκε από την αρχή! Πραγματικά μου φάνηκε ότι είναι από τις πόλεις που μπορείς να την περπατάς για ώρες χωρίς συγκεκριμένο προορισμό γιατί όπου κι αν ακουμπήσει το βλέμμα σου θα βρεις ένα αρχιτεκτονικό στολίδι. Και αυτή η πόλη είναι τόσο underrated!!

Rotterdam is the second largest city of the Netherlands in population and it’s a city where you’ll find many many students! It was destroyed almost completely during the Second World war and constructed from the scratch! I found it an amazing city to walk around and look around for architectural jewels in every corner. And I think that Rotterdam is so underrated and a lot of blog posts and articles must be written about it!

 

Πώς πέρασα λοιπόν την ημέρα μου στο Ρότερνταμ;; Τί έκανα και τί έφαγα;;

So what did i do during my daytrip in Rotterdam??

 

Έφτασα στην πόλη νωρίς το μεσημέρι και πήγα κατευθείαν στο Rotterdam Tourist Information στην οδό Coolsingel 114 για να πάρω χάρτες και μια μονοήμερη Rotterdam Welcome card (με την κάρτα αυτή έχεις πολλές εκπτώσεις σε αξιοθέατα και unlimited travel στα μέσα μαζικής μεταφοράς). Το info center είναι αρκετά μεγάλο και μάλιστα στον κάτω όροφο έχει ένα μικρό μουσείο για την ιστορία του Ρότερνταμ, το ‘Rotterdam Discovery‘, που για μένα ήταν η τέλεια εισαγωγή στην πόλη!!

I took the train from the Hague, reached Rotterdam at noon and went straight to the Rotterdam Tourist Information at Coolsingel 114 to get some maps and the Rotterdam Welcome Card for one day (if you buy it, you have many discounts in attractions and unlimited travel with public transport). The info center is huge and in the basement there’s a small museum about the history of Rotterdam, ‘Rotterdam Discovery‘, the greatest way to start exploring the city.

 

 

Ξεκίνησα λοιπόν να περπατάω την πόλη και σκεφτόμουν τί όμορφη και παρεξηγημένη που είναι, πόσο νεαρόκοσμο έβλεπα και πόσο ωραίο καιρό πέτυχα!!

So I started walking around the city and I was thinking how beautiful and underrated it is, how many young people wander around me and how lucky I was to spend a sunny day in Rotterdam!!

 

 

But first… time for coffee!!!

Ψάχνωντας στο Trip Advisor έπεσε το μάτι μου σε μια ολλανδική αλυσίδα με το όνομα ‘Anne & Max’ και μου φάνηκε ενδιαφέρον. Και ο χώρος ήταν ακριβώς αυτό που ήθελα, ο καφές φανταστικός και η σαλάτα panzarella νοστιμότατη!

I checked on Trip Advisor to find a place for the second coffee of the day and my eye caught a cute place called ‘Anne & Max’ (it’a a dutch coffee chain)! And I loved the place, the great coffee and the delicious panzarella salad I had.

Επόμενη στάση η διάσημη αγορά Markthal!! Το κτήριο είναι τεράστιο σε σχήμα θόλου με γυάλινους τοίχους και το εντυπωσιακότερο mural που έχω δει στην οροφή του!!! Πουλιά, λουλούδια και χρώμα παντού!!! Πραγματικά αξίζει να περάσεις μια βόλτα ακόμα κι αν δεν τσιμπήσεις κάτι σε κάποιο από τα πολυάριθμα εστιατόρια και πάγκους!!

My next stop was the famous Market Hall, Markthal!! A huge dome building with glass walls and the most gorgeous mural I’ve ever seen on the ceiling!! Birds, flowers and colour everywhere!! You should definitely check out this place even if you don’t want to eat something at one of the numerous market stalls and restaurants.

 

 

Και ήρθε η στιγμή να σου πω για το αγαπημένο μου αξιοθέατο στο Ρότερνταμ, τα Cube Houses!! Περίμενα πώς και πώς να δω από κοντά αυτά τα κίτρινα και άσπρα ”κυβόσπιτα” μετά από τόσες πολλές φωτογραφίες άλλων στο Instagram!! Ένα αρχιτεκτονικό διαμαντάκι! Και μάλιστα μπορείς να μπεις και μέσα να δεις πώς είναι (νομίζω με 3 ευρώ) αλλά και να νοικιάσεις ένα για να μείνεις μέσω Airbnb. Δεν ακούγεται φανταστικό;;

And now I can show you my favourite attraction in Rotterdam, the Cube Houses!! I was waiting for so long to see with my own eyes these so instagramable bright yellow and white cube houses, a small architectural gem in the heart of Rotterdam. And they are open to the public (with a small fee, I think 3 euros)!! You can also rent one to stay through Airbnb!! Fantastic, right??

 

 

Η ώρα πέρασε και συνάντησα τη φίλη μου για να πάμε να κάνουμε το γύρο του λιμανιού με την Spido!! Και ευτυχώς μετά από λίγο τρέξιμο για να βρούμε το σημείο εκκίνησης, το Scheepsvaartkwartier (Maritime District), προλάβαμε το τελευταίο δρομολόγιο των 17.00!!! Το Ρότερνταμ διαθέτει ένα από τα μεγαλύτερα και σημαντικότερα λιμάνια της Ευρώπης και του κόσμου!! Η διαδρομή του tour διαρκεί 75 λεπτά και ήταν μια πολύ όμορφη εμπειρία!! Περάσαμε από την διάσημη γέφυρα Erasmus, είδαμε το ιστορικό πλοίο SS Rotterdam (έμαθα αργότερα ότι λειτουργεί σαν luxurious ξενοδοχείο και πώς έχει και escape room), και το ξενοδοχείο New York, πήραμε μια εικόνα από τα ναυπηγεία, τις αποβάθρες και τις μεταφορτώσεις των κοντέινερς που ταξιδεύουν σε όλο τον κόσμο! Και ομολογώ ότι ενθουσιάστηκα ως Πειραιώτισσα, γιατί παρόλο που έχουμε λιμάνι, δεν υπάρχει η δυνατότητα να κάνεις αυτό το tour! Να μια καλή ιδέα για τον Δήμο του Πειραιά!!

The hours passed wandering around the city and it was time to meet my friend and join the harbour tour with Spido!! We ran to find the starting point, Scheepsvaartkwartier (Maritime District) and thankfully we got into the last tour for the day at 5 o’ clock!! Rotterdam has one of the largest and most important ports in Europe and the world and on this tour we had the chance to experience it in all its glory. In 75 minutes we had a unique view of the famous Erasmus bridge, sailed by the historic ship SS Rotterdam (afterwards I’ve learnt that it hosts a luxurious hotel and an escape room) and the Hotel New York and saw the harbours shipyards, docks and the hypermodern transshipping of thousands of containers. And I have to say I was so excited ’cause as a girl born and living in Piraeus, there isn’t a tour to sail around the harbours as an attraction (maybe we should suggest it to the mayor!!)

 

 

Εννοείται ότι πεινάσαμε!! Κάναμε μια γρήγορη βόλτα στα μαγαζιά και κάτσαμε για burger στο ‘Ellis Gourmet burger’ που είναι από τα αγαπημένα σημεία για φαγητό της φίλης μου!! Και τo Cheese burger που πήρα ήταν φανταστικό!!

And of course we got hungry!! We did some window shopping for a while and then we went for burgers at the ‘Ellis Gourmet burger’, one of my friend’s favourite spots for food in the city!! And yes the Cheese burger I ordered was amazing!!

Το Ρότερνταμ λοιπόν μου άφησε τις καλύτερες εντυπώσεις κι ελπίζω να το επισκεφτώ ξανά σύντομα….ιδανικά για διήμερο! Έχει αρχιτεκτονικό ενδιαφέρον, artsy σημεία, ωραίους δρόμους για βόλτα και όμορφα μέρη για καφέ και φαγητό!!

So I left Rotterdam with the best impressions and the hunger to come visit someday again soon…i think it’s ideal for a weekend!! It has architectural gems and a lot of spots to relax, wander around, see art, have coffee and eat some good food.
